Crafting Your Ideal Year: Planning for Success in 2025
As November sets in and the year draws to a close, many of us find our thoughts wandering towards the next year and the possibilities it holds.
I am always excited at the prospect of a new year. New goals to set. Plans to make.
With the turning of the calendar, there comes an opportunity for introspection and planning. But how do we plan purposefully for 2025? What role does purpose play in the planning process?
Discovering Your Purpose
The foundation of effective planning begins with understanding your purpose. I would like you to look at four key questions:
1️⃣ What do I love to do?
2️⃣ What am I good at?
3️⃣ What do I believe needs to be done in the world?
4️⃣ What do I value most?
By reflecting on the intersection of these answers, you will gain clarity on your purpose, and this insight is what you can use to set your goals and priorities.
The Power of Reflection
Before diving into goal-setting, it's important to take a step back.
This process, inspired by Appreciative Inquiry, involves two crucial steps: discovering and dreaming.
Start by reflecting on what is true today by looking back over the past year - or even the past several years. What do you consider your big successes? What challenges have you overcome? What lessons can you take from these?
Taking the time to look back at this year will help you to set up for what you do and don’t want to do in 2025.
Dare to Dream
Let’s take a moment. Dream BIG.
Allow yourself to imagine the best possible 2025, uninhibited by doubts.
You might enjoy journaling, talking it out with friends, or simply daydreaming. Envision what could be possible for you. This dreaming phase sets the stage for more concrete goals later on.
Setting Goals for 2025
Goals should be more than just items on a to-do list; they must align with your purpose.
Don’t think about what others expect of you. What do you want to achieve?
Consider your strengths and how they can support your objectives. Tailor your goals and action plans to leverage your unique talents and working style.
Operationalizing Success
To transform intentions into actions, you'll need to operationalize your plans. Start by envisioning your ideal week, factoring in your values and goals. Grab a sheet of paper or a word doc and plan it out.
Don’t just file this away. Keep it handy and refer back to it. Creating habits takes work.
Finally, engage in daily and weekly planning to counteract the chaos of unplanned days. Allocate time for tasks aligned with your goals to ensure consistent progress.
