Discover Your Superpower to Transform Your Life and Career

In a world where we’re often told to blend in, conform, and suppress our unique traits, it’s easy to lose sight of our inherent superpowers.

From a young age, we may have been discouraged from embracing certain aspects of ourselves, leading us to believe that our natural talents were somehow flawed.

But what if I told you that those very qualities you were taught to shrink away from could be the key to transforming your life and career?

By recognizing and nurturing these innate strengths, you have the power to enhance your own life and positively impact those around you. Let’s explore how identifying and harnessing your superpowers can lead to a fulfilling and successful path forward.

You’ve Been Playing Small

When you were growing up, you more than likely were told that certain parts of you were wrong.

Some of those comments might have looked like this:

“You tell people what to do too much.”

“Don’t be that way.”

“People don’t like that.”

“Oh, you’re so bossy.”

If you received comments like this, you might have taken those parts of yourself and shrunk them down. Because those words were told to you for so long, you thought those aspects of you were negative. You tried not to be that person. You developed a belief that being that way was wrong.

This is why I want you to reclaim your superpower.

Most of us still hold some of this inside. We’re still concerned that these are areas we shouldn’t put on display or try to use. And we certainly shouldn’t lean into them because they might offend or bother somebody.

On the flip of this, if you’ve been told, “Oh, you’re so creative,” or other forms of, “Oh, you’re so…,” whether this has been said in an encouraging or discouraging way, there may be clues to your superpowers there.

From my experience, these things probably hint at your greatest superpower.

These are things that, when you lean into them, learn how to harness them and make the most of them, can completely transform your life and the lives of others around you.

Benefits of Working in the Strengths Zone

Why? Because there are so many benefits to working in your strengths zone. This is where your superpowers live.

People who work in the strengths zone:

  • Look forward to going to work.

  • Have more positive than negative interactions with coworkers.

  • Treat customers better.

  • Tell their friends they work for a great company.

  • Achieve more on a daily basis.

  • Have more positive, creative, and innovative moments.

Not to mention that you’ll feel more satisfied with your work and life and have much more fun while doing it. That’s one of the things that is really important about your superpowers – very seldom are your talents things that you don’t really like doing!

 Identifying Your Superpowers

There are three main ways to start digging into and identifying your superpowers.

1️⃣The Five Clues to Talent

Here are some clues to help you reflect on your innate talents.

Yearning: The types of activities you’re naturally drawn to. What do you seek out and choose to do? What do you really want to do?

Rapid Learning: The types of activities you pick up quickly. What feels almost innate to you?

Flow: The types of activities that come to you automatically, where you can lose track of time. What activities do you get to do where you step into a flow state?

Glimpses of Excellence: These are activities where you have moments of subconscious excellence and stop and think, "How did I do that?”

Satisfaction: The activities that give you a buzz, either while doing them or immediately after finishing them. They make you think, “When do I get to do that again?”

Looking at these five clues to talent takes some introspection and self-reflection, but it is so worth doing.

2️⃣Clifton Strengths

One of my favorite ways to explore your superpowers a little more is to take a CliftonStrengths assessment. This assessment is a tool for discovering innate talents you can turn into superpowers.

Remember, this is a tool, not a prescription. It’s not everything there is to know about your superpower and who you are. But, for many of us, it’s a quick start to get there.

With CliftonStrengths, you don’t have to spend as much time reflecting, thinking, and experimenting because you’ll have a full list of talents that lets you start trying things out immediately.

3️⃣Work with a Strengths Coach

You can also consider working with a Strengths Coach to help you discover your superpowers. They may recommend a CliftonStrengths report, and together, you can understand what each of your top talents means for your life.

This is a great option that will get you a lot further – faster.

Next Steps

If you’ve ever said to yourself, “Well, I don’t really enjoy this, but I’m good at it,” it’s time for some reflection. You might be good at it, but you’ll probably never be great. What you’re doing will probably never be your true superpower if it’s not something you enjoy.

This is why it’s so important to discover your superpowers and develop them into strengths.
